On December 9, 2025, the Bayelsa State government announced a total ban on unauthorised and illegal mining across the state, declaring all community-level mining agreements signed without state approval null and void.
The directive was issued at a meeting with community leaders and stakeholders from Southern Ijaw, Brass and Ekeremor Local Government Areas.
Officials ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal mining operations, emphasizing that unregulated extraction of minerals, particularly black sand, poses serious threats to environmental safety, public health and state revenue.
The government warned that any traditional or community leaders who flout the ban will face arrest and prosecution under applicable laws.

All existing agreements between communities and mining operators that were not authorised by the state have been revoked.
The ban is part of the state’s effort to preserve natural ecosystems, prevent environmental degradation, and safeguard public health while ensuring that mineral resources are exploited responsibly and in accordance with the law.
