John Cena Retires From WWE, Closes Curtain on Two-Decade Career

John Cena officially retired from in-ring competition in WWE on Saturday, December 13, 2025, bringing to an end a career that spanned more than two decades and established him as one of the most accomplished performers in sports entertainment history.

Cena’s final match took place during Saturday Night’s Main Event at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., where he faced Gunther in what was billed as the last competitive appearance of his wrestling career.

In the concluding minutes of the bout, Gunther forced Cena to submit, securing the victory and marking the end of Cena’s active wrestling career.

The 48-year-old made his WWE debut in 2002 and went on to become a defining figure across multiple eras of the company.

He retires as a 16-time WWE World Champion, tying the organisation’s recognised record for world title reigns.

Over the course of his career, Cena also held multiple United States and Tag Team Championships and headlined numerous major WWE events.

Beyond the ring, Cena built a significant humanitarian legacy through his long-standing work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

He holds the record for granting the most wishes in the foundation’s history, having fulfilled more than 650 wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Following his final match, Cena confirmed that he will remain affiliated with WWE in a non-wrestling capacity, continuing to represent the company while focusing on his film, television and philanthropic work.

Cena’s retirement closes a defining chapter in WWE history, ending a career marked by sustained success, global recognition and an enduring commitment to charitable service.
