The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Friday, December 19, 2025 issued aerodrome certificates to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano and Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State.
The certification followed comprehensive safety, security, and operational audits to confirm compliance with national and international aviation standards.
NCAA Director-General Capt. Chris Najomo said the certificates confirm that both airports meet the minimum safety requirements under the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations and the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
He emphasized that aerodrome certification ensures airports operate with approved infrastructure, trained personnel, documented procedures, and effective safety management systems.
FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku described the development as a major milestone in the authority’s airport modernization and safety enhancement programme.

She said the certificates reflect FAAN’s commitment to improving airport infrastructure, strengthening safety protocols, and aligning Nigeria’s airports with global best practices.
Kuku added that FAAN plans to secure certification for more airports across the country to boost passenger confidence and improve Nigeria’s aviation profile.
Aerodrome certification is mandatory for airports handling commercial flights and is considered a key indicator of operational safety and regulatory compliance in the aviation sector.
