Christmas Message: Catholic Bishop Urges End to Banditry, Injustice in Nigeria

The Catholic Bishop of Oyo Diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo, has urged Nigerians to use the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ as an opportunity to end banditry, injustice and other social vices in the country.

Badejo made the call in his Christmas message issued on Wednesday and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan.

The bishop said the birth of Christ should inspire an end to bad governance, bribery, corruption, bloodshed and all forms of injustice, stressing that the season calls for reflection, repentance and renewed commitment to justice and peace.

He urged leaders at all levels to repent and prioritise the welfare of the people, particularly by empowering youths and spreading joy through good governance and justice.

“Our leaders at all levels should repent and help those under their care in families, churches, businesses and society at large,” he said.

Badejo also advised Christians to shun hypocrisy and live out their faith genuinely by showing love, forgiveness and goodwill to others.

He called on Nigerians to stop hurting, cheating or exploiting one another, and to embrace peace instead of violence, noting that the light of Christ should be allowed to overcome the darkness in the world.

The bishop described the Christmas story as one of hope and humility, saying babies symbolise hope for a better future and that Jesus Christ embodies hope for a better world.

According to him, Christmas is centred on Jesus Christ, in whom humanity finds hope of salvation, urging Nigerians to emulate Christ by doing good and obeying His commandments.

Badejo wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a peaceful, progressive New Year.
