Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have recovered a large cache of high-calibre ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway general area of Maiduguri, Borno State, in what the military described as another success in ongoing intelligence-driven operations across the North-East.

The recovery followed sustained troop presence and follow-up actions after a recent cordon-and-search operation aimed at denying terrorist and criminal elements freedom of action, particularly in the aftermath of recent suicide bombing incidents that were foiled or neutralised.

According to a statement signed by Media Information Officer, Sani Uba, on Saturday, the troops on January 2, 2026, received a distress call alerting them to suspicious metallic objects concealed inside a drainage channel in the Bulumkutu Railway area.

The Troops, in collaboration with Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, immediately moved to the location to secure the area and assess the potential threat.

A detailed search of the site led to the recovery of 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, including some live 12.7mm rounds, as well as power banks concealed within the drainage channel.

The military said preliminary safety measures were swiftly implemented to secure the area, while efforts are ongoing to drain the channel to determine whether additional dangerous items may be hidden there.

Troops, working alongside the Police and other security agencies, continue to dominate the general area to ensure the safety of residents and prevent any attempt by criminal elements to retrieve the recovered items.

No casualties or untoward incidents were recorded during the operation, and the security situation in the area remains calm, with troops maintaining heightened vigilance.

OPHK noted that the recovery underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations, sustained military pressure and community cooperation in preventing potential threats.

The military also emphasized the importance of timely information from members of the public in enhancing collective security.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious items or movements to security agencies, as authorities reiterated that community cooperation remains vital to sustaining peace and security in the North-East.
