Rivers Ijaw Congress Withdraws Support for Fubara, Endorses Wike

The Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress has withdrawn its support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and declared support for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The decision was announced on Saturday, January 3, 2026, during Wike’s thank-you visit to Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Chairman of the congress, Senator George Sekibo, said the group’s position followed internal consultations and was informed by what he described as Wike’s longstanding political relationship with the Ijaw people.

Sekibo said Wike played a key role in the political process that led to Fubara’s emergence as governor and insisted that the congress would not act in a manner he described as ungrateful.

He stated that the group had resolved to align with Wike’s political direction going forward.

He also reaffirmed the congress’ support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the Ijaw people would continue to back leaders they consider consistent and reliable.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of Okrika Local Government Council, Akuro Tobin, described Wike as his political benefactor and credited him with supporting political leadership in the area.

The Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Linda Stewart, also spoke in support of Wike, citing his record in governance.

In his remarks, Wike thanked the Ijaw leaders and supporters for their endorsement and urged them to remain united and committed to what he described as leadership based on loyalty and performance.

The development reflects ongoing political realignments in Rivers State as political actors and interest groups position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
