2027: Datti Rules Out ADC Defection, Reaffirms Loyalty to Labour Party

As political alignments shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed has declared that he will remain with the Labour Party, distancing himself from recent defections by key figures within the opposition.

Baba-Ahmed, who was the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, ran alongside Peter Obi, whose presidential bid was defeated by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.

Obi has since left the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress, a platform being promoted by a coalition seeking to challenge the ruling APC.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, January 7, at the Labour Party National Headquarters in Abuja, Baba-Ahmed made it clear that he would not be following Obi’s political path.

The former senator representing Kaduna North said his commitment remained firmly with the Labour Party, under whose platform he contested the last general election.

He pledged to stay politically active and to make himself available in the build-up to 2027, stressing his desire to contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at fixing Nigeria.

Baba-Ahmed also dismissed the appeal of the ADC, saying he was not persuaded by the coalition behind the platform.

He described members of the coalition as “disgruntled politicians,” explaining that this perception reinforced his decision to remain with the Labour Party.

His remarks signal an attempt to project stability within the Labour Party, even as internal disagreements and high-profile exits continue to reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle.
