CAF Sets WAFCON 2026 Draw in Rabat, Marks New 16-Team Format

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the final draw for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will be staged in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday, January 15, 2025.

In a statement released on Wednesday, CAF said the ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm local time, which corresponds to 13:00 GMT and 15:00 Cairo time.

Beyond the draw, the continental body revealed that the same day will also feature the announcement of winners in several women’s football award categories, including the CAF Women’s Coach of the Year and other top honours.

CAF noted that the 2026 tournament will represent a landmark moment in the history of WAFCON, as it will be the first edition to feature an expanded 16-team format.

The teams that have secured qualification are host nation Morocco, alongside Nigeria, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.

Ahead of the draw, CAF will unveil winners in three major award categories: CAF Women’s Coach of the Year, CAF Women’s Interclub Player of the Year and CAF Women’s Club of the Year.

These awards were initially scheduled to be presented during the CAF Awards ceremony on November 19, 2025, but were postponed due to the extended women’s football calendar, occasioned by the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League.

CAF also confirmed that voting for the three categories has officially reopened. While the football body does not take part in the voting itself, it supervises and coordinates the entire process.

For the Women’s Interclub Player of the Year award, votes will be cast by media representatives, as well as team captains and coaches participating in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The Women’s Coach of the Year will be decided by votes from the media and coaches across CAF member associations, while the Women’s Club of the Year will be determined by the media in collaboration with the CAF Women’s Technical Committee.
