FCT CP Cautions Women Against Accepting Free Rides From Strangers

The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory Command, Miller Dantawaye, has warned residents, particularly women, against accepting free rides from strangers as part of efforts to curb criminal activities in Abuja.

Dantawaye gave the warning on Friday during a courtesy and advocacy visit by a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association, including representatives of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, NBA Women Forum and Unity Bar, to the FCT Police Command headquarters.

In a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the commissioner urged residents to remain security-conscious and vigilant, especially when boarding commercial vehicles. He advised members of the public, particularly women, to be cautious about the vehicles they use and to avoid accepting unsolicited lifts from unknown persons.

The CP emphasised the importance of collective responsibility, timely information sharing and public cooperation in preventing and dismantling “one-chance” criminal operations across the Federal Capital Territory.

While commiserating with the lawyers over the killing of their colleague, Ms Princess Ochigbo, Dantawaye assured the delegation that the command had launched discreet and extensive investigations into the incident, with a commitment to identifying and apprehending those responsible.

It was earlier reported that Ochigbo’s body was found on the Kubwa Expressway on Tuesday, with her bag, containing her identity card and other personal belongings, recovered a few metres from the scene. Documents found on her suggested she may have been a staff member of the FCT High Court.

In a brief statement on Wednesday, the FCT Police spokesperson confirmed that detectives had commenced investigations into the case.

The development comes amid growing concern over violent crimes in Abuja, following the recent killing of a nurse at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, identified as Chinemerem Chuwumeziem, an incident that sparked widespread condemnation from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, FCT Council.
