DHQ Renames Armed Forces Remembrance Day to Honour Serving, Fallen Heroes

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has renamed Armed Forces Remembrance Day as Armed Forces Celebration, Remembrance Day to recognise both serving personnel and those who lost their lives defending the country.

The announcement was made on Thursday, January 8, 2026, by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information at the DHQ.

The annual event will continue to be observed on January 15, as designated by the Federal Government, to honour active-duty personnel, veterans, and fallen members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

According to the DHQ, the renaming captures the full purpose of the occasion, celebrating the courage, commitment, and professionalism of serving officers while remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Events leading up to the day include ceremonies and tributes, culminating in wreath-laying and a military parade on January 15.

The change does not alter the date or core traditions but broadens the meaning of the observance to honour both present and past service to the nation.
