The Edo State Police Command has arrested a mother and a senior nurse in connection with the alleged sale of a newborn baby in Uromi, Esan North‑East Local Government Area.
The incident was first reported to police on January 8, 2026, and subsequent investigations led to the arrests on Sunday, January 11, 2026 by the command’s Eagle Raiders Squad, which uncovered a child trafficking syndicate operating in the community.
The prime suspect, Martina Dachung, allegedly sold her newborn baby for ₦1.4 million.
Police also detained Ighalo Grace, the matron of Eguavon Medical Centre, Uromi, and Oha Promise, who were reportedly involved in facilitating the illegal transaction.
Authorities confirmed that the newborn baby was recovered safely and the proceeds of the transaction were seized.

The suspects are expected to face court charges as investigations continue.
Police said the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in Edo State and urged the public to provide information to help protect vulnerable children.
