Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, following the hijacking of a passenger boat along the Nigeria–Cameroon waterways.

This was contained in a statement by Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Headquarters 13 Brigade, Major Yemi Sokoya, and shared on the Nigerian Army’s Facebook page on Monday.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on Sunday, January 11, after a distress call alerted security forces that suspected sea pirates had hijacked a passenger boat operating between Cameroon and Nigeria.

The assailants, reportedly moving in two speedboats and a wooden boat, abducted the passengers near the Kombo Fishing Port within Cameroonian waters.

In a swift response, troops of 13 Brigade deployed from Ikang pursued the suspects, leading to an exchange of fire. During the operation, one of the pirates’ speedboats capsized, forcing the criminals to abandon the kidnapped passengers and flee into the surrounding creeks.

All 18 passengers were rescued unharmed.

Commending the troops for their prompt action, Commander of 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena, described the operation as a testament to the courage and professionalism of the personnel.

Alimikhena also called on members of the public to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information that could aid in combating criminal activities across Cross River State, stressing that community cooperation remains vital to sustaining security.

The operation, the Army said, underscores the continued commitment of 13 Brigade to safeguarding lives and maintaining security along regional waterways.
