Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) has identified Shariff Umar, also known as “Yusuf,” as the principal coordinator of a suicide bombing network linked to recent attacks and foiled plots in Nigeria’s North East, following intelligence-led operations in Maiduguri.
According to a statement signed by the Media Information Officer, HQs Joint Task Force, Lt. Sani Uba, on Saturday, the breakthrough came after a cordon-and-search operation conducted in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri on December 31, 2025.
According to the statement, the operation led to the arrest of 14 suspects connected to suicide bombing activities.
Subsequent investigations, the military said, helped unravel the structure and operational roles within the network.
OPHK disclosed that a suspect currently in custody, identified as Ibrahim Muhammad, provided information that consistently pointed to Shariff Umar as the ringleader.
Investigators said Umar was responsible for recruiting, preparing, and directing individuals involved in attacks, as well as coordinating logistics and the movement of components used for improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The military further stated that Umar was linked to the attack at the Gamboru Market Mosque on December 24, 2025, and was also identified as the coordinator of a suicide bombing attempt that was later foiled in Damaturu.
Investigations indicated that he personally facilitated the transfer of IED components to operatives within Maiduguri.
Authorities also said additional links within the network were uncovered during the investigation, including the alleged involvement of Umar’s wife, Yagana Modu.

His stepdaughter, Amina, reportedly confirmed having previously seen one of the suspects at their residence, a detail the military said shed light on how the network concealed its activities within communities.
“All suspects are currently in custody and undergoing intensive, multi-layered investigations,” OPHK said, adding that efforts are ongoing to dismantle the entire network, identify other collaborators, and recover any remaining materials linked to planned attacks.
The Joint Task Force emphasised that the development underscored the importance of cooperation between security agencies and civilians, noting that terrorist groups often rely on community silence and fear to operate.
OPHK urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation is critical to preventing attacks and restoring lasting peace in the region.
