Joint Airstrikes Target Terrorists in Sokoto, Zamfara

In a decisive show of force, the United States and Nigerian security forces carried out precision airstrikes on Thursday, December 25, 2025, targeting confirmed terrorist camps in Sokoto State and neighbouring Zamfara State, officials confirmed.

The strikes focused on bases linked to Islamic State affiliates, responsible for attacks on civilian communities across northwest Nigeria.

The operation is part of ongoing structured security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, encompassing intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and support measures conducted in accordance with international law, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

In a press release (No: MFA/PR/2025/122) issued on Friday, December 26, the Ministry said the operation “reflects structured collaboration with international partners, including the United States, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism.”

It added that “all counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity.”

The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the strikes were conducted at the direction of the U.S. President and Secretary of Defense in close coordination with Nigerian authorities. Early assessments indicate that multiple militants were neutralized.

The Ministry highlighted Nigeria’s continued efforts to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, prevent cross-border threats, and strengthen national security and intelligence capabilities.

Terrorist violence in any form, whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities, remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security,” the statement said.

While casualty figures beyond militant deaths have not been released, analysts note that northwest Nigeria remains a complex security environment, with multiple armed groups and extremist cells operating across Sokoto, Zamfara, and surrounding areas.

The Federal Government has assured the public that updates on counter-terrorism operations will continue to be provided through official channels.
