Anambra Police Rescue South Africa–Based Nigerian, Foil ₦40m Kidnap Plot

The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a kidnapped Nigerian man during a routine security patrol in Orumba South Local Government Area of the state, marking another breakthrough in ongoing efforts to curb violent crime.

The victim, identified as a South Africa–based businessman and a native of Obinagu–Isikweachi in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, was abducted on January 1, 2026, from his hometown by a gang of armed men.

In a statement released on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the victim was rescued by police-led joint security operatives attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Aguata, during a routine visibility patrol around the Isulo axis in the early hours of Thursday.

According to Ikenga, the kidnappers—six armed men who reportedly wore face masks—had demanded a ransom of ₦40 million from the victim’s wife and relatives.

“The victim revealed that he managed to escape from the kidnappers’ den, which led to his eventual rescue by the joint security operatives,” the statement said.
