The Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) has urged motorists across the state to take better care of their vehicle number plates, warning that neglect and improper handling could compromise road safety and enforcement efforts.
The advisory was issued on Friday by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LSNPPA, Mr. Olayanju Cole, during a stakeholder engagement with the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), led by its General Manager and CEO, Mr. Afolabi Solebo.
Cole emphasised that number plates serve as a vehicle’s primary means of identification on the road, describing them as “your identity on the road.” He expressed concern over the growing number of faded, damaged, and defaced plates in circulation, noting that such conditions undermine traffic management and law enforcement.
The meeting focused on the importance of replacing worn-out or defective number plates with new, standardised versions issued by the Lagos State Government. Cole cautioned motorists against using harsh or chemically concentrated substances to clean their plates, warning that materials such as aromatic solvents, alcohol-based spirits, acetone, petrol, brake oil, kerosene, and abrasive cleaning tools can damage the reflective surface and render plates unreadable.

He advised motorists to adopt gentle cleaning methods that preserve the integrity and visibility of number plates, stressing that readable plates are essential for security, accountability, and efficient traffic regulation.
In response, LASCOPA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of motorists and ensuring improved service delivery across the state. The agency pledged continued collaboration with relevant authorities to promote public awareness and compliance with vehicle identification standards in Lagos.
The engagement forms part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to enhance road safety, improve traffic administration, and ensure uniform compliance with vehicle registration regulations.
