Senate President Godswill Akpabio has summoned lawmakers back to Abuja for an emergency plenary session scheduled for Tuesday, the 10th of February, 2026.
The directive was communicated in a notice issued on Sunday, the 8th of February, by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, who called on all senators to resume legislative duties by noon.
According to the notice, “The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026.”
No official explanation was provided for the sudden recall of lawmakers.
The development follows closely on the heels of the Senate’s decision on the 4th of February to vote down a bill seeking to amend the Electoral Act.

The rejected proposal aimed to compel the real-time electronic transmission of election results, a reform widely viewed as critical to improving transparency and restoring confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
That decision has sparked strong backlash from civil society groups, political activists, and public figures who warn it could weaken electoral credibility ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Notable voices opposing the move include former minister Oby Ezekwesili and socio-political group Afenifere, both of whom have cautioned that blocking the amendment risks further diminishing public trust in the nation’s democratic institutions.
