Kanu Orders Permanent End To South‑East Monday Sit‑At‑Home

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has officially ended the Monday sit‑at‑home directive across Nigeria’s South‑East region.

The announcement was made on Sunday, February 8, 2026, following a directive from IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, and takes effect Monday, February 9.

Residents have been called on to resume normal social and economic activities immediately.

IPOB emphasized that markets, schools, offices, transport services, and all commercial activities should operate as usual.

The group warned that any attempt to enforce previous sit‑at‑home restrictions would contradict Kanu’s directive and stated that no state government or authority could legally impose shutdowns on citizens.

The Monday sit‑at‑home order had been observed in the South‑East since August 2021, originally instituted to protest Kanu’s detention and advocate for Biafran self-determination.

Over the years, the practice disrupted education, commerce, and daily life, drawing criticism from governments, business leaders, and residents who said it hindered economic development and public safety.

With the permanent cancellation, traders, civil servants, students, and commuters across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states are expected to carry out normal routines without restrictions.

IPOB urged citizens to remain vigilant against intimidation or false reports that could create fear, reaffirming its commitment to peace and orderly conduct in the region.
