The Abia State Government has given the green light for the disbursement of the revised minimum wage to employees of the State Education Management Board (SEMB) and teachers across the state.
The development was confirmed on Sunday, the 8th of February, 2026 in Umuahia by the Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Kenechukwu Nwosu, in an official statement.
Nwosu explained that the approval aligns with the Otti administration’s broader agenda to strengthen the welfare and morale of education workers, describing it as part of deliberate reforms within the sector.
According to him, “The government is committed to ensuring that all education personnel receive their entitlements promptly.
“We are making steady progress on processing leave allowances for SEMB staff and teachers.
“We are also arranging payments for teachers whose services were previously extended for five years but later discontinued due to system-related issues,” he said.

He further praised Governor Otti for placing education high on the state’s priority list and for maintaining a consistent focus on improving the working conditions of teachers and other education personnel.
It will be recalled that the Abia State Government approved the implementation of the revised minimum wage in 2023, in compliance with the federal government’s directive. However, administrative and processing delays had slowed salary and allowance payments for some SEMB staff and teachers, particularly those affected by the expiration of extended service arrangements.
The latest payment exercise is expected to address outstanding obligations and fully align education workers’ earnings with the adjusted wage framework.
