Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reaffirmed that the safety and security of residents remain the foremost focus of his administration.
The governor made the statement on Sunday, the 11th of January, 2026, at the Mater Dei Catholic Cathedral in Umuahia during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service. The event, organised by the Abia State Government in collaboration with the Nigerian Legion, Abia State chapter, honoured the nation’s fallen heroes.
Addressing the congregation, Otti assured citizens of his unwavering commitment to their welfare, stressing that nothing would derail his administration’s people-centred agenda.
“For us, safety and security are top priorities. That is why virtually every month we sit down with all the service commanders and the Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers to hold a security council meeting, where we review developments and map out strategies for the following month.
“We will continue to work for our people. Nothing can distract us. I want to assure you that this is a government of the people, not a government of a few,” the governor stated.
Otti also expressed optimism about the year ahead, noting that 2026 would be transformative for Abia State. He highlighted that significant changes are already underway and will be sustained, particularly through the implementation of the ambitious 2026 budget.
The governor extended condolences to the families of fallen Armed Forces personnel, encouraging them to remain resilient. He also paid tribute to all members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, both living and deceased, for their sacrifices in maintaining peace and security. He thanked service commanders for their dedication and commended residents for their continued support in safeguarding the state.
“I want to thank the service commanders for their labour of love, which we do not take for granted. We also appreciate our people for the massive support they continue to give to the government.

“The Armed Forces are working with other security agencies, the government, and our people who are the chief security officers of their communities to ensure peace in the state. These collective efforts have produced the results we are seeing,” Otti said.
In his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Dr Michael Ukpong, urged members of the Armed Forces to emulate Cornelius, the biblical army officer known for his fear of God, humility, and commitment to prayer. He reminded the soldiers that they are servants of the people and should not intimidate those they are tasked to protect.
The bishop prayed for God’s continued protection over serving personnel and eternal rest for the departed soldiers.
