Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said the Federal Government, working with the National Assembly, is determined to return Nigeria to the ranks of Africa’s most peaceful and secure nations.
Akpabio spoke through the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Peter Nwebonyi, at the Inter-Denominational Church Service for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2026 held in Abuja on Sunday, January 11.
He said authorities are focused on creating a stable environment that supports both the present population and generations to come.
“Let me assure you that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the National Assembly, is committed and resolute in its efforts to restore Nigeria as one of the most peaceful and secure nations in Africa.
“The sacrifices we commemorate today strengthen our resolve to build a safer, stronger and more united Nigeria,” Akpabio said.
He also spoke about the importance of protecting constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, particularly freedom of religion and conscience, describing them as essential to sustaining democracy and national harmony.

“Ranked among the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, with over 500 languages spoken, Nigeria is home to people of different cultures, faiths and traditions.
“We are Christians, Muslims and adherents of traditional beliefs, united under one flag and one destiny. Our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, freedom of worship and freedom of conscience.
“These freedoms are the pillars upon which our democracy stands, and they must be protected at all times,” he said.
Akpabio paid tribute to fallen members of the Armed Forces, saying their sacrifice continues to underpin Nigeria’s unity, peace and development.
He added that leaders’ choices today would shape Nigeria’s future, noting that security and stability are crucial for the well-being of future generations.
Also speaking at the service, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), said President Bola Tinubu is committed to ensuring that the Armed Forces and other security agencies receive adequate equipment, motivation and welfare support to carry out their constitutional duties effectively.
“His actions speak volumes about the value he places on service and sacrifice.
“We pray that Almighty God continues to grant him wisdom, strength and guidance as he leads our great nation,” Musa said.
Musa acknowledged that Nigeria is going through difficult times but said he remains confident the country will overcome its challenges.
