Rooney Sounds Relegation Alarm For Spurs After Old Trafford Loss

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has said Tottenham Hotspur are firmly embroiled in a relegation battle following their continued poor run of form in the Premier League.

Rooney made the remarks after Spurs suffered a 2–0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, a result that extended their winless run to seven league matches. The loss left Thomas Frank’s side 15th on the Premier League table, just six points above the relegation zone.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, according to BBC Sport on Monday, the former Manchester United striker said Tottenham could no longer dismiss the threat of relegation given their current position and performances.

“With their current form, you’d have to say they are,” Rooney said. “West Ham have been in form, Nottingham Forest pick up results here and there. You can’t think that they’re not in a relegation battle where they are. I think they’ll definitely be looking over their shoulders.”

Tottenham’s problems in the match were compounded by the dismissal of captain Cristian Romero, who was sent off in the first half for a late challenge on Casemiro. It was the defender’s sixth red card since joining the club.

Rooney described the decision as marginal but criticised Romero’s discipline, suggesting it has been a recurring issue during his time at Spurs.

“I can see why it’s been given, but I think it’s a little bit harsh,” Rooney said. “Sometimes you lose your head, and I think he’s done that throughout his time at Tottenham.”

Romero’s red card came days after he publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy on social media, describing it as “disgraceful” that only 11 fit players were available for Tottenham’s recent 2–2 draw with Manchester City.

Rooney said the comments may have increased the pressure on head coach Thomas Frank, noting that outspoken criticism must be matched by performances on the pitch.

“What doesn’t help is comments in the week before about the lack of players Tottenham have,” he added. “He clearly speaks his mind, but you’ve got to back that up with performances when you’re vocal like that — and I don’t think he’s done that. All that’s going to do is bring more pressure on Thomas Frank.”
