Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has tipped Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice as a future captain of the England national team following his impressive display in the Premier League clash against Everton.
Rooney made the remarks after watching Rice deliver a commanding midfield performance as Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Everton on Saturday, a result that returned Mikel Arteta’s side to the top of the league table. Rice, 26, played a central role in the win, dictating the tempo of the game and demonstrating leadership qualities that have drawn widespread praise.
Speaking to BBC Sport on Monday, Rooney said the former West Ham captain appears ready to assume greater responsibility at international level and could eventually succeed Harry Kane as England captain.
“For me, he’s the one who’s probably waiting for Harry to hang up his boots at some point,” Rooney said. “His drive and his personality stand out. Everyone who knows him seems to love him.”
Rooney highlighted Rice’s tactical intelligence and versatility, noting his ability to influence the game at both ends of the pitch.

“He was all over the pitch against Everton. His decision-making – when to pass it, where to pass it, what foot to pass it to – it was a pleasure to watch. He was absolutely incredible,” he said.
The former England captain added that Rice’s contributions often go unnoticed, despite his impact on games. According to Rooney, the Arsenal midfielder’s work rate, leadership and personality make him the ideal candidate to take over the captaincy in the future.
“He’s the right one to take over for me because of his drive and his personality. He’s irreplaceable for England,” Rooney added.
