Lagos Begins Four-Week Partial Expressway Closure- Osiyemi

The Lagos State Government has announced a four-week partial shutdown of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to allow for rehabilitation works by the Federal Ministry of Works.

The restriction, which begins on Wednesday, the 11th of February, 2026, will affect specific sections of the busy corridor as authorities commence repairs.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, the 10th of February, 2026, via X.

Osiyemi explained that the repairs will cover the portion stretching from U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate, impacting both inbound and outbound traffic.

“The rehabilitation work is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, and end on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, spanning a period of four weeks,” the statement read.

“During this phase, traffic from Lagos/Abule-Egba inward to Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate will be diverted to one half of the carriageway, approximately 20 metres away from the active work zone, and restored to full access after the work area,” the statement said.

To reduce congestion, the state government said the project will be implemented in two stages.

Phase One, targeting Abeokuta-bound vehicles, will run from Wednesday, the 11th of February, to Wednesday, the 4th of March, 2026. This stage will focus on the stretch between U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate.

Work will be carried out on one lane at a time. Once repairs are completed on the first section, traffic will be redirected to that rehabilitated portion while construction continues on the remaining half.

Motorists heading toward Lagos will experience uninterrupted movement throughout Phase One.

Phase Two is scheduled from Wednesday, the 4th of March, to Wednesday, the 11th of March, 2026, and will affect traffic heading toward Lagos. The section between Obadeyi Bus Stop and Ekoro Junction will undergo rehabilitation during this period.

Under this arrangement, vehicles travelling from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate inward to Lagos/Abule-Egba will be diverted to one side of the carriageway, about 20 metres away from the construction zone, with normal traffic restored once work is completed.

As with the first stage, repairs will be done in halves, and traffic will be redirected to completed sections as work advances. During this time, traffic heading toward Abeokuta will continue without disruption.

Osiyemi assured motorists that traffic control measures will be strictly enforced to ensure smooth flow during the project.

He urged road users to plan their movements in advance, adhere to traffic signs, and cooperate with officials, appealing for patience while the necessary repairs are carried out for the benefit of all commuters.
