A Catholic priest and university scholar, Innocent Uwah, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria.
Uwah, who is the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nigerian British University, made the appeal on Saturday, February 14, during the institution’s third matriculation ceremony.
He stressed that AI could strengthen the credibility of elections and address challenges associated with real-time electronic result transmission.
“There is no reason why AI, which has been successfully deployed in education, medicine, and research, cannot be fully integrated into our electoral system,” Uwah said. “If we key into AI-enabled automation, election results will be reliable, clear, and fault-free.”
He expressed concern over what critics describe as the reluctance of the National Assembly to provide clear legal backing for electronic result transmission ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Uwah argued that the adoption of AI in electoral processes would build public confidence and bring Nigeria in line with global technological advancements.
“Banks use technology to transmit money securely. Why can’t we apply the same in our elections?” he asked, urging INEC and politicians to embrace AI tools.
During the ceremony, Uwah also congratulated the 257 new students matriculating across the university’s five faculties, including Computing and Information Technology, Law, Management and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Engineering and Applied Sciences.
He advised students to be diligent, avoid negative peer influences, and pursue excellence in their academic journey.
Licensed in May 2022, the Nigerian British University began operations in February 2023 with three faculties and has since expanded to five, positioning itself as a hub for AI research and technology-driven education.
