The Federal Government has raised alarm over a growing trend of Nigerian citizens being recruited into foreign armed conflicts through deceptive and illegal channels.
In a statement issued on Sunday, February 15, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said investigations show that some Nigerians are lured abroad with promises of high-paying jobs, educational opportunities, or fast-tracked migration, only to be deployed to combat zones they did not anticipate.
Some recruits reportedly sign contracts in foreign languages without understanding the terms, and travel documents are occasionally confiscated upon arrival.
Authorities emphasised that participation in foreign armed conflicts outside approved government frameworks carries serious legal and security risks and may violate both Nigerian and international laws. Citizens who engage in such activities do so at their own risk.

The warning follows reports that some Nigerians have died while fighting in the Russia‑Ukraine war, with others appealing for repatriation after being misled about the nature of their assignments.
To tackle the issue, the government is intensifying investigations into recruitment networks and increasing public awareness of the risks.
Nigerian diplomatic missions abroad have been instructed to strengthen consular vigilance and issue timely advisories to citizens.
Parents, community leaders, and educational institutions have also been urged to educate young Nigerians about the dangers of suspicious overseas offers and to verify employment or study opportunities through official channels before making travel plans.
