The Peoples Democratic Party has congratulated its successful candidates in Saturday’s FCT Area Council elections while setting up a legal team to handle post-election petitions from aggrieved aspirants who believe they were robbed of victory.
In a statement issued on Sunday, February 22, and signed by National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong, the party said the victories recorded were fewer than expected but significant given what it described as widespread intimidation, money politics and executive interference.
“The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has congratulated successful candidates of the PDP in the Area Council Elections which were held in Abuja on February 21, 2026.
“This victory, though less in number than we anticipated, is particularly gladdening because it is against the background of unprecedented intimidation, high-powered money politics and brazen executive brigandage,” the statement read.
The party alleged that security personnel were used to disrupt the electoral process in some areas.
“Reports and video evidence abound where armed security personnel were used to cart away result sheets in polling units, intimidate voters, and unduly influence the outcome of the elections,” the PDP claimed.
The party specifically congratulated Mohammed Kasim, who was declared Chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, along with councillors who emerged victorious in their respective wards.

On the legal front, the PDP announced the establishment of a special team headed by National Legal Adviser Shafi Bara’u to assist aggrieved candidates with election petitions.
“They should immediately contact the National Legal Adviser for prompt action, as delay is fatal in election petition cases,” the statement said.
The party also pointed to what it described as low voter turnout, attributing it to growing public disillusionment with the electoral process under the recently signed Electoral Act 2026.
“The incredible voter apathy in these polls is a direct response to the anti-people Electoral Act 2026, where the people have completely lost faith in the electoral outcomes from elections conducted under this Act.
“These Local Council polls may just be a foreshadowing of the forthcoming general elections in 2027, if changes are not urgently made,” it stated.
The PDP closed with a warning. “There is time to correct the wrongdoing by the National Assembly and the President to save our democracy from collapse.”
