Tinubu Mourns Former UBA Chairman, Chief Israel Ogbue

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Israel Ogbue, former Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), who died at the age of 99.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended condolences to the family, friends and associates of the late elder statesman, describing him as a distinguished public servant and accomplished financial executive.

Chief Ogbue had a long and notable career spanning the Federal Civil Service, the National Insurance Corporation (NICON), and NAL Merchant Bank. He joined the board of UBA as a non-executive director in 2005 and was appointed Chairman in 2011, serving until 2013.

According to the President, Chief Ogbue provided “steady, principled leadership” during a pivotal phase in the bank’s transformation, demonstrating dignity and strategic foresight throughout his tenure.

The late banking executive was also the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu, wife of UBA Group Chairman Tony Elumelu, linking him to one of Nigeria’s most prominent business families.
