Olatunji Disu has been named the 23rd Inspector-General of Police. His appointment was announced on Tuesday, the 24th of February, 2026, after a directive by President Bola Tinubu. He succeeds Kayode Egbetokun.
Known to many as Tunji Disu, he brings more than three decades of policing experience to the role.
Born on the 13th of April, 1966, in Lagos Island, Lagos State, he joined the Nigeria Police Force on the 18th of May, 1992. Since then, he has moved steadily upward through the ranks.
He studied English Education at Lagos State University. He later earned master’s degrees in Public Administration and in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.
Disu has also completed several professional courses within and outside Nigeria. His training covers areas such as small arms smuggling, internet fraud, strategic leadership, and forensic investigations.
His career includes several frontline and command positions. As Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, he led operations aimed at tackling violent crime.
He later headed the Intelligence Response Team, stepping in after the suspension of Abba Kyari.

He also served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where he oversaw policing activities in two high-pressure environments.
At the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, he worked as Assistant Inspector-General of Police, focusing on strengthening investigative processes and professional standards.
Over time, Disu has built a reputation for discipline, field experience, and intelligence-led policing.
His appointment places him in charge of the Nigeria Police Force at a period when public attention remains fixed on reform, accountability, and stronger investigative capacity.
