Opposition parties led by the African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party have urged the National Assembly of Nigeria to begin a fresh review of the Electoral Act, arguing that certain provisions weaken electoral transparency and require amendment.
The call was made at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, February 26, 2026, where opposition representatives demanded the removal of clauses they described as problematic and inconsistent with credible elections.
They insisted that a broader consultation process should precede any final legal framework for the 2027 polls.
Among those present were former Senate President David Mark; political strategist Buba Galadima; former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Participants included ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola; former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; and ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi.
Other attendees were Senator Dino Melaye; former ADC chairman Ralph Nwosu; and former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, alongside additional dignitaries.
Opposition leaders reiterated their view that the Electoral Act 2026 requires further refinement to strengthen public confidence and electoral integrity, urging lawmakers to undertake a comprehensive amendment process.
