Speaking in Washington DC on Wednesday, United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth delivered a forceful defence of the ongoing military campaign against Iran, declaring that the conflict “was never meant to be a fair fight.”
Hegseth accused Iran of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump, framing the current offensive as both retaliatory and strategic.
“Iran tried to take the life of President Trump, but President Trump got the last laugh,” he said. “We’ve taken control of Iran’s airspace and waterways. The terms of this war will be set by us.”
His remarks underscore the increasingly assertive tone adopted by Washington as hostilities intensify across the Middle East.
The United States, alongside Israel, has launched coordinated strikes targeting Iranian military and government installations in what officials describe as a decisive effort to weaken Tehran’s strategic capabilities.

Reiterating the administration’s core objective, Hegseth stressed that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains non-negotiable. “Iran will never access a nuclear bomb — not on our watch,” he said.
The comments come amid heightened global concern over the widening conflict and its potential to destabilise the broader region.
While US officials maintain that the operations are designed to deter future threats, critics warn that such rhetoric may further entrench divisions and complicate diplomatic efforts.
For now, Washington’s message appears unequivocal: the United States intends to dictate the course of the conflict and maintain military dominance as tensions continue to mount.
