The United States and Israel have launched coordinated military strikes against Iran, dramatically escalating regional tensions into open confrontation and raising fears of a wider Middle East conflict.
Israeli officials confirmed that the operation began early Saturday local time, describing it as a large-scale “pre-emptive” strike targeting Iranian military infrastructure and strategic facilities.
Explosions were reported in Tehran and other western regions of the country, with plumes of smoke seen rising over parts of the capital.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the action was aimed at neutralizing what he described as an existential threat linked to Iran’s missile and nuclear capabilities. Defence Minister Israel Katz echoed that position, calling the campaign a defensive necessity.
In Washington, President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces were participating in what he termed “major combat operations.”
He stated that the campaign seeks to dismantle Iran’s military infrastructure and counter perceived threats to U.S. and allied security interests in the region. U.S. officials indicated the strikes followed months of joint planning and may continue for several days.
Iran Responds with Missile and Drone Attacks
Iran responded swiftly, launching a series of missile and drone strikes toward Israeli territory. Air-raid sirens sounded across multiple cities, with interceptions reported by Israeli defense systems. Authorities declared a state of emergency and closed national airspace.
Tehran also expanded its retaliation beyond Israel, targeting U.S. military facilities across the Gulf. Missiles were reportedly directed toward installations including Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, as well as American assets in Bahrain, home to the United States Fifth Fleet, and facilities in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Interceptions were reported in several locations, and emergency advisories were issued to U.S. personnel and civilians.
Iranian officials warned that further retaliation would follow if strikes against its territory continue.
Escalation After Years of Tensions
The confrontation marks the most direct and extensive military exchange between the U.S.–Israel alliance and Iran in recent years. The current crisis follows a prolonged period of shadow conflict, including missile exchanges, cyber operations, and disputes over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Airspace closures remain in effect in both Iran and Israel. Regional governments have heightened security as fears mount that the conflict could expand into a broader regional war.
Global Economic Shockwaves
Financial markets reacted sharply to the unfolding crisis. Oil prices rose amid concerns over supply disruptions in the Gulf, while investors shifted toward safe-haven assets such as gold. Major stock indices declined as uncertainty spread across global markets.
Casualties and Damage Still Emerging
As of this report, casualty figures and the full extent of damage remain unclear. Military operations appear ongoing, and diplomatic channels are reportedly under strain as international actors urge restraint.
Major international outlets including CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, and The New York Times are providing continuous updates as the situation develops.
With both sides signaling resolve, the coming hours may prove critical in determining whether the crisis stabilizes, or deepens into a sustained regional conflict.
