The United States and Israel have launched coordinated military strikes against Iran, dramatically escalating regional tensions into open confrontation and raising fears of a wider Middle East conflict.
Israeli officials confirmed that the operation began early Saturday local time, describing it as a large-scale “pre-emptive” strike targeting Iranian military infrastructure and strategic facilities.
Explosions were reported in Tehran and other western regions of the country, with plumes of smoke seen rising over parts of the capital.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the action was aimed at neutralizing what he described as an existential threat linked to Iran’s missile and nuclear capabilities. Defence Minister Israel Katz echoed that position, calling the campaign a defensive necessity.
