The Jerusalem municipality has ordered the immediate closure of schools and most workplaces following Israel’s launch of strikes on Iran, as tensions between the long-time adversaries sharply escalate.
In a statement issued Saturday, city authorities said the decision was taken in line with an updated security assessment by the Home Front Command.
Officials confirmed that normal activities would be suspended nationwide, with only essential services permitted to operate.
“In accordance with the assessment of the situation by the Home Front Command and the launch of a preemptive strike against Iran, it has been decided to change the guidelines and transition from full activity to essential activity throughout the country,” the statement read.
Under the directive, educational institutions will remain closed, public gatherings are prohibited, and employees are instructed not to report to work unless classified as essential personnel.
The restrictions took effect at 8:00 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) on Saturday and are scheduled to remain in place until 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Monday.
The sweeping shutdown underscores the seriousness of the security climate, with residents bracing for potential retaliatory measures and heightened military activity.
