Bayero University Kano has commenced an investigation into allegations that one of its students is involved in online impersonation and financial scams following widespread claims circulating on social media.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the institution’s Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, on behalf of the Registrar.
According to the statement, the university management became aware of public commentary and social media posts linking an individual reportedly identified as a student of the institution to acts of online impersonation and financial misconduct.
“The Management of Bayero University Kano has taken note of allegations currently circulating in a public commentary and on social media linking a person reported to be a student of the University to acts of online impersonation and financial misconduct,” the statement said.
The management emphasised that the institution maintains strict standards of conduct, discipline and character for all students throughout the duration of their studies.
It added that any conduct capable of bringing the name and reputation of the university into disrepute is treated with utmost seriousness.
The statement further noted that the personal actions of any individual student do not represent the values or character of the university as an institution.
“In view of the allegations, the University has commenced a preliminary inquiry to ascertain the facts surrounding the matter.

The appropriate University authorities are reviewing the issue in line with the institution’s established rules and disciplinary procedures governing students’ conduct,” it stated.
The management also commended the public-spirited efforts of Farooq Kperogi and other individuals who provide financial assistance to students in need.
According to the statement, many well-meaning individuals quietly extend support to students by assisting with registration fees and other educational expenses, describing such acts as important in expanding access to education.
The university assured the public that if the allegations are substantiated, appropriate disciplinary action would be taken in line with its regulations and applicable laws.
It urged members of the public to allow the investigative process to run its course while refraining from speculation or the circulation of unverified information.
The probe follows an outcry on social media by alleged victims, many of whom are popular influencers who claimed they were approached with emotional pleas, religious appeals and fabricated stories intended to attract sympathy and financial support.
