The Lagos State Government has announced the resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise across the state, beginning on April 25, 2026.
The development was disclosed on Saturday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement shared on the social media platform X.
According to Wahab, the sanitation exercise will hold on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., during which residents are expected to participate actively in cleaning their immediate surroundings.
He urged Lagos residents to clear drainage channels in front of their homes, dispose of waste responsibly and maintain a clean environment as part of their civic duty.
The commissioner emphasised that the initiative forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment while also improving flood control measures in the state.

“This exercise is a collective responsibility and a vital part of our commitment to a cleaner, healthier and flood-resilient Lagos,” Wahab stated.
He also noted that the sanitation programme would be strictly enforced, warning that the government would deploy its regulatory agencies to ensure compliance across communities.
The monthly environmental sanitation exercise had previously been a long-standing public health initiative in Lagos, aimed at encouraging residents to participate in maintaining environmental hygiene and preventing blocked drainage systems that often contribute to flooding during the rainy season.
Officials say the revival of the programme reflects the state government’s renewed focus on environmental sustainability, public health and community participation in keeping Nigeria’s commercial capital clean.
