The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (SSANIP-MAPOLY) on Tuesday urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to provide special intervention funds to address the deteriorating state of the polytechnic due to chronic underfunding.
In a statement issued on Monday by its Chairman and Secretary, Tunde Abiodun and Olutosin Ogundeyi, the association lamented that while the institution’s monthly salary obligations total ₦210 million, it receives only ₦20.75 million as a monthly government subvention—a situation that has persisted for over a decade despite rising economic pressures.
The union said that management has had to rely heavily on dwindling internally generated revenue to cover the shortfall and support other basic infrastructure, noting that the decline in funding has been compounded by challenges such as programme accreditation, increasing competition among tertiary institutions, and infrastructural limitations.
“The reduction in student enrollment has inevitably impacted the financial capacity of the institution to sustain academic and administrative activities,” the statement said.
SSANIP highlighted that accreditation exercises by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) require substantial investment in laboratories, workshops, libraries, teaching equipment, and staff development.

Without adequate funding, the polytechnic risks failing to meet the required standards, which could affect admissions and reduce the institution’s competitiveness.
The union further called for urgent rehabilitation, modernization, and expansion of facilities to meet contemporary teaching, learning, and technological training demands.
It stressed that addressing these infrastructural needs would enhance educational quality and restore the polytechnic’s standing among similar institutions nationwide.
SSANIP described the polytechnic as a strategic asset for technical education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship development, and manpower training in the state, and argued that strengthening it would yield broader socio-economic benefits.
“In view of the foregoing, SSANIP MAPOLY calls on the Ogun State Government to urgently review the current level of subvention, provide special financial intervention to support accreditation of programmes, and invest in infrastructure development,” the statement said.
The union assured that it remains committed to industrial harmony and supporting genuine efforts aimed at advancing the institution, urging the state government to give prompt attention to these pressing issues for the benefit of staff, students, and the future of technical education in Ogun State.
