Army Launches Social Media Awareness Campaign For Troops

The Nigerian Army on Tuesday began a three-day social media awareness campaign to boost cybersecurity knowledge and encourage responsible online conduct among its personnel.

Organised by the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, the event is being held at the Lt.-Gen. T.A. Lagbaja Hall, Ribadu Cantonment, from March 24 to March 26.

Declaring the campaign open, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, said the initiative is designed to equip personnel with the skills needed to navigate the complexities of the digital environment.

Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Administration, 1 Division, Col. Ikechukwu Akabike, Wase highlighted   social media’s influence on public perception, security operations, and overall military effectiveness.

He noted that understanding the opportunities and risks of social media is vital for safeguarding national security and institutional integrity.

“The Nigerian Army recognises that social media is a double-edged sword. While it offers opportunities for communication, engagement, and intelligence gathering, it also poses significant risks if not properly managed,” he said.

The campaign will address topics including social media’s impact on security operations, managing digital footprints, cybersecurity best practices, and the role of social media in national defence.

Wase urged participants to actively engage with experts and use the platform to enhance their professional competence.

He also commended the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command for its efforts in promoting responsible social media use and strengthening cyber awareness within the force, stressing that continuous learning is essential to adapting to evolving digital trends and improving operational effectiveness.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the campaign is part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to integrate modern cyber strategies into its operations and enhance national security, featuring lectures and interactive sessions.
