The Federal Capital Territory Football Association (FCTFA) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Sani Zubairu, President of the Nigeria Football Referees Association (NFRA), who passed away on Tuesday morning.
FCTFA Secretary Usman Ilerika, speaking in Abuja, said football stakeholders in the Federal Capital Territory sympathise with the NFRA and the FCT Football Referees Council over the loss.
Describing Zubairu’s death as “painful and irreplaceable,” Ilerika noted that it occurred at a time when his contributions were still greatly needed.
Y“The late president left an indelible mark on the development of refereeing, and his contributions will not be forgotten,” he said, praying for the repose of the deceased’s soul and strength for his family, colleagues, and the wider football community.
Ilerika added that the Chairman, Board, and staff of the FCT Football Association extend their condolences to all affected by the loss.

Patrick Pascal, Chairman of the Bauchi State Football Association, described Zubairu as a towering figure in Nigerian football and a mentor to many referees.
Pascal highlighted that the late FIFA-rated referee from Bauchi State dedicated his life to the growth and development of refereeing in Nigeria and played a key role in nurturing young officials who have gone on to officiate at top-level competitions.
“His death is a huge loss, not just to Bauchi State but to Nigerian football as a whole. He was a mentor, a leader, and a guiding light to many young referees,” Pascal said, adding that the association would continue to honour Zubairu’s legacy by promoting grassroots refereeing and supporting young officials.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that funeral arrangements are expected on Tuesday at 4 p.m., in accordance with Islamic rites.
