Kano Govt Enforces Exit Deadline For 2027 Aspirants

The Kano State Government has ordered all public officials intending to run in the 2027 elections to leave their positions on or before the 31st of March, 2026.

The directive was contained in a circular dated the 24th of March, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim. It was sent to key officials, including commissioners, advisers, directors-general, and other senior appointees across the state.

The government said the decision follows provisions of the Electoral Act and other rules guiding public office holders.

It stated that anyone planning to participate in the elections must first step down to meet legal requirements.

The circular explained that the move enforces Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which governs the role of public servants in political activities. It added that the measure is also intended to uphold civil service principles such as neutrality, accountability, and integrity.

“All public officers who are interested in contesting in the forthcoming general elections are requested to resign or retire as the case may be on or before Tuesday, 31st March 2026,” the circular stated.

The government also directed relevant authorities to ensure the message is widely shared and fully implemented.
