Cleric Insists On ₦1m Bounty Over Alleged Blasphemy, Sparks Outrage

A northern Islamic cleric who allegedly placed a ₦1 million bounty on a pastor accused of insulting the Prophet has doubled down on his stance, declaring he will not withdraw the offer under any circumstance.

The controversy, earlier reported by SaharaReporters, stems from a viral video in which the cleric openly called for the beheading of the unnamed pastor over alleged blasphemy—remarks that have triggered widespread concern about incitement and rising religious tension.

In a renewed statement, the cleric reaffirmed his position, insisting that the monetary reward remains in place for anyone willing to carry out the act.

He maintained that he would honor the pledge, stressing there would be “no going back.”

The video, which has circulated extensively on social media, shows the cleric displaying bundles of cash while urging members of the public to execute the threat.

He further suggested that the amount could be increased if the initial ₦1 million reward was considered insufficient.

The identity of the targeted individual, as well as the events leading to the alleged blasphemy, remain unclear at the time of filing this report.

The development has drawn sharp reactions, including from concerned citizens who have called for urgent intervention by security agencies.

In a separate clip, a woman criticised what she described as the silence of authorities, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), warning that failure to act could embolden further acts of incitement.

She questioned the apparent lack of response, contrasting it with the need to maintain public safety and prevent escalation of religious conflict.

The woman also decried what she termed misplaced priorities, arguing that resources used to incite violence could be better directed toward addressing poverty and social welfare challenges.

Observers say the incident underscores the need for restraint and strict adherence to the rule of law in addressing sensitive religious matters, as tensions continue to mount over the issue.
