Otti Unveils Plans For Abia Rail Project, Housing Devt

The Abia State Government has outlined fresh steps in its urban renewal agenda, with a proposed railway development in Umuahia and new housing projects as part of its long-term infrastructure plan.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, gave the update on Monday, April 20, while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

In a follow-up statement released on Tuesday, April 21, and signed by Oge Christopher of the Information Department, the government said talks with the Nigerian Railway Corporation on a modern rail station in Umuahia are at an advanced stage.

Kanu explained that the proposed rail facility will be sited close to the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and designed as a mixed-use transport hub combining mobility services with commercial activity.

“The proposed train station will be located adjacent to the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and will feature a modern urban railway corridor integrated with retail and commercial activities,” he said.

He added that access roads and supporting infrastructure would be constructed to improve traffic flow and connectivity within the city.

On ongoing urban renewal efforts, Kanu said the government has completed arrangements to relocate traders from Isi Gate to the Relief Market in Afara, noting that preparatory works are already underway.

He stated that compensation for affected property owners has been paid, while perimeter fencing and retaining structures are currently being built.

He also disclosed that plans are in motion to move commercial transport activities from Okigwe Park to the newly developed bus terminal, with temporary arrangements in place for traders during the transition.

According to him, the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal is near completion and will soon be inaugurated alongside facilities under the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Scheme, which includes charging stations, ticketing systems, upgraded junctions, and bus shelters across the city.

“These include charging stations, ticketing points, junction improvement works, as well as bus shelters strategically located across Umuahia.

“When fully operational, the new central bus terminal and the Green Bus Shuttle Service will position Umuahia among leading cities in Nigeria with modern and efficient public transportation systems,” he stated.

He further noted that several projects handled by the Greater Ohafia Development Authority, including road networks and a new market, are ready for commissioning.

In addition, the government confirmed that construction of a Federal Housing Authority estate in Umuahia will begin on April 21, 2026, as part of a collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Housing.

Addressing concerns that the project was solely federal, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Ferdinand Ekeoma clarified that the state remains actively involved.

“The most important thing is the involvement of Abia State… we are not dragging anything with them,” he said, dismissing claims of exclusion as politically motivated.
