Tinubu Reshapes Education Sector, Appoints Chiefs, Rector, Renews Library Head

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved new appointments and a tenure renewal across key education agencies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Federal Polytechnic N’yak-Shendam, and the National Library of Nigeria.

The appointments were announced on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, by the Presidency.

At NECO, Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu was appointed Chairman of the Governing Board, while Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi retained his role as Registrar/Chief Executive.

Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State (2013–2014) and ex-chairman of NBTE (2018–2021), is a professor of educational administration at Obafemi Awolowo University.

For NBTE, Tinubu appointed Prof. Babatunde Salako as Chairman of the Governing Board. Salako, former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (2016–2024), is noted for institutional reforms and expanded research capacity.

Earlier, on Thursday, April 10, 2026, the President reappointed Prof. Idris M Bugaje for a second and final five-year term as NBTE Executive Secretary.

In Plateau State, Engr. Dr Bongfa Binfa was appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic N’yak-Shendam for a single five-year term, succeeding Dr Mukaila Zakari Ya’u, whose tenure ended on Monday, March 16, 2026. His appointment followed a selection process initiated in September 2025.

Binfa holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and previously served as Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, and a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Idah.

Meanwhile, Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi’s tenure as Director-General/Chief Executive of the National Library of Nigeria was renewed for a final five-year term. She was first appointed on Thursday, September 2, 2021.

Since assuming office, she has driven reforms including the National Repository of Nigeria, digital library systems, and indexing tools, alongside efforts to complete the National Library headquarters in Abuja and consolidate heritage collections.

The Presidency said the appointments are aimed at strengthening leadership, ensuring continuity of reforms, and advancing key education sector projects.
