Moves to tighten trust in Nigeria’s public examinations gained momentum as the National Examinations Council announced plans to collaborate with the National Open University of Nigeria on digital result confirmation and wider use of computer-based testing across the country.
NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, revealed the plan on Tuesday, the 24th of February, 2026, during a visit to NOUN’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma. He said the joint effort would improve the screening of candidates’ credentials and tackle certificate falsification.
Wushishi explained that the arrangement would allow NECO’s e-Verify system to link directly with NOUN’s admission procedures so that only authentic results are processed.
He noted that before the rollout of the electronic platform, verification was done manually. That method often dragged on for months, especially when foreign schools requested confirmation.
The registrar stated that close to five million results have now been authenticated digitally. He added that the council is advancing plans to phase out paper-based examinations completely in favour of computer-based testing, in line with federal education guidelines.

Responding, Uduma described result verification as essential to maintaining academic standards. He disclosed that the university admits about 40,000 students each year and will begin full integration with the NECO e-Verify platform starting from the 2026/1 admission session.
Uduma also assured NECO of the university’s backing in expanding CBT, pointing to NOUN’s study centres and ICT infrastructure spread across the country.
Both bodies said the partnership would help safeguard examination processes and improve confidence in Nigeria’s education system.
