Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has declined an invitation to attend a proposed opposition summit in Ibadan, describing the gathering as an attempt to recycle failed political actors.
Sowore made his position known in a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday.
According to him, there is no justification for trusting individuals who previously held power and presided over what he described as years of stagnation, corruption, and systemic decay.
“There is no need to pretend that the same men (and a few women) who held Nigeria to ransom for years can suddenly reinvent themselves as champions of progress,” he stated.
He stressed that Nigerians remain aware of past governance failures, adding that not all citizens have “suffered from amnesia.”
The activist further clarified that the African Action Congress would not participate in what he termed a political “charade” aimed at repackaging discredited leaders under the guise of opposition politics.
“For the avoidance of doubt, our revolutionary party will not be part of any charade designed to recycle failed political actors under the guise of ‘opposition,’” he said.

Sowore reiterated his party’s commitment to building what he described as a credible, people-driven alternative anchored on integrity, accountability, and genuine transformation.
He also took aim at major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party, and the African Democratic Congress, accusing them of representing entrenched political interests.
“We will mobilize Nigerians across the country to rally behind a credible vision that rejects the decadence and deception represented by these parties,” he added.
Sowore concluded by asserting that Nigeria requires a decisive break from its political past rather than a rebranding of familiar figures.
“Nigeria does not need a rearrangement of the same broken pieces; it needs a complete break from the past,” he said.
