Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has condemned Nigeria’s defence leadership following a deadly wave of attacks in Jos, Plateau State, which left dozens feared dead.
Sowore, in a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, accused the Defence Minister of prioritizing political activities over the safety of citizens.
“Overnight, more than 80 people were reportedly killed in Jos,” Sowore wrote.
“When a nation’s Defence Minister is more focused on helping a failed ruling party like the All Progressives Congress organize its convention than on safeguarding lives, what outcome should citizens realistically expect?”
This criticism follows renewed violence in Plateau State, where gunmen carried out coordinated nighttime attacks on communities in Jos North.
Initial reports from residents and officials indicate that at least 20 people were confirmed dead, with many others injured.
The casualty count remains fluid as rescue efforts continue.

In response, authorities have imposed a curfew in the area to restore calm and support security operations.
Plateau State has long been a flashpoint for violence, rooted in a mix of farmer-herder conflicts, ethnic tensions, and criminal activities.
Over the years, these recurring attacks have led to devastating loss of life and displacement, with many calling for a more robust response from authorities.
The attacks also add to a troubling wave of insecurity across Nigeria in 2026, with deadly incidents reported in Borno, Katsina, and Kwara states, highlighting ongoing weaknesses in the nation’s security architecture.
Sowore’s statement resonates with a growing public demand for accountability and more effective security measures.
As families mourn and communities struggle to recover, many Nigerians are demanding that leaders act swiftly to prevent further tragedies and ensure lasting peace.
