Abuja Corps Member Killed As Security Officials, Armed Robbers Engage In Crossfire

A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abdulsamad Jamiu, has lost his life during a security operation in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Olawuyi Odunola, the incident occurred at Shagari Estate when troops on routine night patrol responded to a distress call reporting an ongoing armed robbery.

Upon arrival, the soldiers reportedly came under heavy gunfire from fleeing suspects, leading to a brief but intense exchange.

In the course of the confrontation, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by the troops to secure the area and save lives, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Guards Brigade described the loss as “heartbreaking,” noting that it has deeply affected officers and personnel involved in the operation.

Preliminary reports indicate that the situation was volatile, with troops actively working to repel the attackers and protect residents in the community.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any suspects were apprehended or neutralised during the exchange.

The Commander of the Guards Brigade, alongside officers and soldiers, extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC community, and others impacted by the incident.

The statement emphasised solidarity with those grieving and acknowledged the profound sorrow caused by the loss.

The military has launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring the public that findings will be made available once concluded.

Jamiu’s remains have been handed over to civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

The Guards Brigade reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory, stating that operational procedures would be reviewed to enhance civilian protection.

Residents have also been urged to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies as efforts to combat crime in the area continue.
