U.S. Mission Alerts Nigerians Over Visa Overstay Risks

The United States Mission in Nigeria has again urged Nigerians to adhere strictly to immigration regulations, cautioning that visa overstays could have wider implications for other applicants.

In a statement obtained from its X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the mission underscored the importance of following U.S. travel rules to preserve fair access for genuine travellers.

According to the mission, failure to comply with visa conditions—such as overstaying permitted durations or breaching entry terms—can shape how future applications from Nigerians are assessed, potentially affecting approval outcomes.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory stated.

“Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”

The mission noted that Nigerians frequently visit the United States for purposes including education, business, tourism, and family engagements, urging travellers to respect the terms of their visas throughout their stay.

It further raised concerns about visa fraud and the misuse of travel documents, calling on the public to help uphold the integrity of the system.

Individuals with reliable information about such activities were advised to report through official consular fraud prevention channels via AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov.

Reaffirming its stance, the mission said it remains committed to promoting safe, lawful, and orderly travel between both countries, while ensuring that compliant travellers are not negatively impacted by the actions of others.
