U.S. Closes Abuja Embassy Visa Operations After Staff Evacuation

The United States Embassy in Abuja has closed visa appointments at its facility, directing affected applicants to check their emails for rescheduled dates.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Thursday, April 9, the embassy said visa operations at the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos remain operational.

U.S. Embassy Abuja is closed for visa appointments. Applicants should check their email for details on rescheduled appointments.

“Visa operations at U.S. Consulate General Lagos continue. American citizen services are available in emergencies and by appointment,” the statement read.

The closure comes a day after the U.S. Department of State announced the evacuation of non-essential staff and their families from Nigeria due to deteriorating security conditions.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 8, the department confirmed that non-emergency U.S. government employees and family members at the Abuja embassy have been authorized to leave.

“Nigeria: On April 8, 2026, the Department of State authorised non-emergency U.S. government employees and U.S. government employee family members to leave U.S. Embassy Abuja due to the deteriorating security situation,” the travel advisory stated.

“The overall Travel Advisory for Nigeria is Level 3: Reconsider Travel.”

The Level 3 advisory urges American citizens to carefully reconsider travel plans to Nigeria.

“Reconsider travel to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, and inconsistent availability of health care services. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory,” the state department warned.

The U.S. government advised citizens who choose to travel to Nigeria to avoid most northern states, as well as Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and parts of Rivers State, due to heightened risks linked to terrorism and kidnapping.

The embassy did not provide specific details on when visa appointments would resume at the Abuja facility but advised affected applicants to monitor their emails for updates.
