Activist Harrison Gwamnishu Visits Victim’s Family, Shares New Details On Delta Police Shooting Case

Human rights advocate Harrison Gwamnishu has met with the family of a young man allegedly killed during a police operation in Delta State, where new accounts have emerged regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Gwamnishu disclosed in a social media update on Wednesday that he visited the bereaved family of the deceased, identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, and engaged directly with his mother, who shared her version of events leading to the fatal encounter.

According to him, the grieving mother alleged that she had suffered the loss of two sons in separate incidents involving police officers, a situation she described as deeply painful and called for justice and accountability from the authorities.

The development follows heightened public interest in a viral video linked to the case, which has continued to spark debate over alleged excessive use of force and possible extrajudicial conduct by security operatives.

The incident reportedly occurred during a police operation in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026, where Ogidi was said to have been shot by an Assistant Superintendent of Police.

While the Nigeria Police Force initially stated that the deceased was arrested while allegedly transporting a parcel suspected to contain a firearm, conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the sequence of events.

Reports further suggest that the officer involved, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his weapon during the operation in alleged breach of Force Order 237 and established operational guidelines, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Following the incident, the Delta State Police Command confirmed that the officer has been taken into custody and transferred to Abuja as internal disciplinary processes commence.

Authorities have reiterated that the police institution does not condone extrajudicial actions, stressing that due process will be followed and that the outcome of ongoing investigations will determine further action.

The case has continued to draw attention from civil society organisations and legal commentators, who are demanding a transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Gwamnishu added that further revelations may emerge as engagement with the victim’s family continues, as public scrutiny of the case intensifies nationwide.
