The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and transfer of a police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, has drawn public concern and prompted swift action from authorities.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, on Tuesday night, operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command had acted on intelligence from members of the public regarding a suspect allegedly attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Police officers were deployed to apprehend the suspect. However, during the operation, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, allegedly violated established procedures by discharging his firearm, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the act, describing it as a clear breach of Force Order 237 and the operational guidelines of the Nigeria Police Force.
Following the incident, the Area Commander in Effurun was directed to arrest the officer immediately.

ASP Usman was subsequently transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba before being moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja.
He is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, where he will face disciplinary actions and possible prosecution.
The police command reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, human rights, and accountability, stressing a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and misconduct.
CP Oyeniyi also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued.
He urged members of the public to remain calm, noting that the authorities are taking all necessary steps to address the situation.
